Islington Labour is on the side of private renters and against rogue landlords.
Everyone should have the right to a decent home and poor housing can impact every aspect of people’s lives. It can harm their mental and physical health. The most recent Housing Stock Survey found that 29% of the privately rented dwellings in Islington didn’t meet a decent homes standard. So we are committed to improving housing for our residents.
Over 66,000 households in Islington live in privately rented properties. While there may be many good landlords and decent private rented properties in our borough, many are not.
We are already taking bold steps to protect private renters. But we want to go further.
Islington’s Labour-run Council has announced that privately-rented homes in Tollington, Hillrise and Finsbury Park wards will now be covered by a landlord licensing scheme. This will mean landlords must do more in hazard hotspots to protect tenants – or face action from the Council’s enforcement team.
Government rules mean the Council can only have a landlord licensing scheme that covers 20% of the borough, but we want to do more. Everyone in Islington should be able to benefit from safe, good quality private-rented homes.
