Islington’s Labour-run Council was the first in the country to call for Universal Credit to be scrapped, back in 2018.
While we know Universal Credit is not fit for purpose, the Covid-19 pandemic has made life tougher for many local people in Islington. Many have seen their income fall and have been forced to rely on Universal Credit to pay their rent, heat their home and put food on the table.
After a £20 per week increase last year, the Tories are now planning to take this away and cut payments by £1,040 per year for struggling families in Islington.
This change would be awful at the best of times, but as local people continue to face hardship due to the pandemic, the cut is cruel and will push more people into poverty.
Labour has forced a vote on this in Parliament this week. Sign our petition below to tell the Tories that Islington says no to the Universal Credit cut.
Stop the April Universal Credit cut
We, the undersigned, call on the Tory Government to stop the planned April cut in Universal Credit payments and give local people the support they need.
