Islington’s ticket offices will remain open, in an announcement made this week by the Secretary of State for Transport, Mark Harper.
Back in July, the Government asked train companies to set out proposals on ticket office closures across the country, which included proposals to close multiple train stations around Islington.
It was initially supposed to be a 28-day consultation but following concerns raised over the existing obligations in law, threats of legal action and huge public backlash, the consultation was extended to the beginning of September. Islington Labour are proud to have campaigned on this since the start, spreading awareness amongst residents and encouraging people to respond to the consultation, including a campaign session at Finsbury Park station in August.
Closing ticket offices would have been a huge mistake for the following reasons:
- The ticket office is the only way for passengers to ensure they get the best value fare for their journey – including refunds, disabled persons’ discounts, seat reservations and much more.
- Staff can provide invaluable information and assistant to passengers that machines can’t – they can give information about schedules, routes, and ticket types.
- Ticket offices typically accept a variety of payment methods, which is important for customers who may not have access to electronic payment methods.
- In case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, passengers can seek assistance at ticket offices.
- Ticket offices ensure that train travel is accessible to everyone, including those who may not have access to online booking tools or who have disabilities that require special accommodations
Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport – Councillor Rowena Champion said “As Islington Labour, we are proud of the work we, and the wider Labour movement as a whole, have done to campaign against these closures and are delighted that our ticket offices won’t be closing.
It is clear from the hundreds of stories that people have told over recent months that our ticket offices are of immeasurable value to the Islington community.
It is right that ticket offices will remain open, making it easier for those with disabilities to travel around”
