Islington Labour Manifesto Launch

Our manifesto sets out our promises to you over the next four years if we are re-elected to run Islington Council.

We have a record to be proud of. Whether that is delivering the largest council house building programme Islington has seen in a generation, being ranked the best single-tier Council in the country for tackling climate change or supporting residents to claim millions of pounds of benefits they are entitled, we have been standing up for you in Islington.

We have accomplished so much together, but there is so much more to do. That is why we have put forward an ambitious manifesto that will deliver for you in Islington over the next four years.

For so many residents in Islington, the housing crisis is the most important issue they are facing. That is why our manifesto commits to increasing the supply of genuinely affordable homes at social rent through building new council housing, buying back former council homes, holding developers to account and tackling housing fraud.

Over the next four years, more than £58 million is allocated for buy‑backs of homes lost through right‑to‑buy, alongside a pledge to maintain a planning requirement of 50 per cent genuinely affordable homes in new developments.

We will also invest £388 million in our existing housing stock, with the aim of achieving a 100 per cent decent homes standard by 2030. We also commit to expanding landlord licensing, acting against rogue landlords, homelessness prevention through partnership working, and stronger protections for private renters.

Whilst serious and violent crime has fallen, we know that it is still a concern for you. That is why we are committing to the expansion of 24/7 neighbourhood patrols to include estates and public spaces, the creation of a £1.9 million Safer Communities Fund for resident‑led safety improvements, and enhanced use of tools such as CCTV and Public Space Protection Orders.

We know you want to see cleaner and healthier streets, so we are committed to weekly bin collections, rapid fly‑tipping removal, filling potholes within 72 hours and installing 400 electric vehicle charging points. We will continue our ambitious environmental policies to bring us towards becoming a net zero borough, which includes planting trees and investing in active travel.

Over the next four years we want to tackle the cost‑of‑living crisis while supporting a locally rooted economy. That includes supporting 1,000 residents into work and a further 1,000 into apprenticeships, continue income maximisation services to help residents claim benefits they are entitled to, and maintaining one of the most generous council tax support schemes in the country.

We are also committing to ethical procurement, pension fund divestment from companies linked to human rights abuses, continuing our status as a Borough of Sanctuary, and offering sustained support for the voluntary and community sector through £2.7 million per year in grants.

Our manifesto is our promise that we will keep standing up for Islington for the next four years if we are re-elected to run the Council. A vote for Islington Labour is a vote to make the borough cleaner, healthier and safer.
