Islington Labour has won the Local Elections today, winning a record fifth successive term.
Over the past 16 years, Islington Labour has delivered the largest council house building programme in a generation, become the best single-tier Council in the country for tackling climate change and supported residents to claim millions of pounds of benefits they are entitled to. We have a record to be proud of, and over the next four years we have promised to deliver more.
We recognise for many in Islington, and across London, these results reflect a desire to see those in power address what matters to them most. From the housing crisis to the cost-of-living crisis, people want to see real change in their lives. We will continue to lobby the Government on what matters to Islington, from ensuring we receive fair funding to standing up for our migrant and refugee communities as a borough of sanctuary.
Cllr Una O’Halloran, Leader of Islington’s Labour Council, said:
“It is an honour and a privilege to lead Islington Labour into a record fifth successive term running Islington Council.
“We have a record to be proud of locally, and residents know they can trust us to be a fair, responsible and ambitious Council. We are proud to have Islington put their trust in us once again.
“We are devastated to see some fantastic colleagues lose their seats and they will be dearly missed, we appreciate all the hard work they have put in to ensuring that our council stands up for our residents and laying the groundwork for us to be able to continue running the council.
“Our manifesto has set out how we will tackle the issues that matter most locally, and we cannot wait to get started in delivering.
“In the coming days and weeks, we will begin setting out how we plan to make Islington safe and secure for everybody who lives and works in our wonderful borough.
We know that our borough is a place of great opportunity, but life is difficult for too many. Our goal is to make sure people feel secure at work and in their homes, and safe on our streets. Islington is a wonderful place, full of opportunity. The work begins today.”
