Islington Labour campaign saves the buses

After months of campaigning, countless canvassing sessions and over 2500 people signed up to the petition, Islington Labour is delighted to announce that our treasured local bus services have been saved.

In July, after over two years of negotiations to secure a long-term funding deal with the Government, Transport for London (TfL) announced proposals to axe the Number 4 entirely, severely cut back the 254, 259 and 476, and reroute the 214 so it no longer runs through the borough.

But as our local community knows, these bus services are vital to the way people in Islington move around. Led by the Islington Labour campaign, working with our trade unions, local people made their voices heard by putting pressure on the Tory Government to fully fund TfL and allow our bus services to be protected.

Today, Transport for London has announced that all of Islington’s bus services will be maintained. This means that there will be no cuts to any bus services in Islington, and local people can continue to rely on the bus services they value so much.

In response, Leader of Islington’s Labour-run Council, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz said:

“People in Islington understandably treasure our local bus services. We are in a cost of living and climate Emergency so they are more important than ever.

 

“I’ve been travelling on the Number 4 from Archway my whole life and I’m so proud of the way our community has come together to fight the Tory Government and protect our buses.

 

“Today’s announcement is proof that when we come together for a common cause, Islington can fightback against this rotten Tory Government and win.”
